I-85 Access Improvements, Greer, SC
This highly accelerated interchange improvement project involved constructing new entrance interchanges with I-85 to the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport and the BMW Plant with funding by the Department of Commerce. The project consisted of interstate improvements, relocations of the associated frontage roads, and two new high speed interchanges which included 6 bridge structures totaling 61,000 SF, 700,000 SY of asphalt pavement, and 850,000 CY of excavation. The approach to this project was to aggressively address utility relocations, significantly reduce environmental impacts, and mitigate concerns from GSP Airport and BMW. Despite scope growth of 13% via owner directive extensions, the project was completed without claims within the original 21 month schedule.

S-83/I-95 Honda Plant Interchange, Timmonsville, SC
This project was a fast track design build project for a new Honda manufacturing facility. Four new ramps were opened to traffic in 153 days and Road 83 was widened in an additional 150 days. As a team partner, United delivered the new five-lane 230′ bridge across I-95 significantly ahead of schedule to facilitate the project being completed within budget and without claims.

US 1/601 over Wateree River, Camden, SC
As the recipient of the 1998 Carolinas AGC Pinnacle Award for “Best Highway-Heavy Project”, this design-build project was a “text book application with an impressive WOW factor” according to the selection committee. The project consisted of constructing a detour, replacing the existing 1952′ bridge, and reconstructing the roadway approaches. The project team provided the planning, design, construction, landscaping, quality control and quality assurance, project documentation, and warranties. The bridge was built in just 452 days in lieu of the allowable 1207 days and was completed significantly under budget.

Statewide Bridge Replacements - South Carolina
United completed the first ever statewide bridge replacement program in South Carolina. This design-build project consisted of the replacement of 33 bridges in various locations throughout the state. This project was completed in just 15 months from notice-to- proceed to completion of the last bridge. This turn-key project included all facets of design and construction including environmental permitting, right-of-way acquisition, geotechnical investigations, hydraulic analysis, utility coordination, structure design, roadway design, public notification, and construction. UIG oversaw the initial scoping of every bridge in the planning stage in order to provide the best value from a construction viewpoint prior to the start of design activities.

Bobby Jones Expressway/I-20 Interchange Project
Augusta, GAUnited provided project management, all roadway work, assistance with bridge work, and safety/utility/environmental management. This complex urban interchange improvement and interstate widening project involved 5 significant bridges, 7 miles of roadway widening/construction, and reconstruction of I-20/I-520 interchange. Value engineering and innovative scope management saved GADOT over $4.0 million. The project was completed 9 months ahead of schedule.

Southern Connector Public Private Partnership Project
Greenville, SCToll facility with 45 bridges along new 17-mile four-lane grade-separated divided highway with 2 major interchanges, 3 railroad overpasses, and numerous river/stream crossings and grade separations totaling 11,000 LF and 590,000 SF of bridges. Contract scope included final corridor studies and route alignment, public hearings, environmental documentation, right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation, public relations, design, construction, operations, and maintenance. Project was delivered ahead of schedule in just 27 months for a lump sum without any claims or disputes.

Route 288 Bypass, Design-Build Project
Richmond, VAUnited provided construction and engineering services for this public facility with 25 bridges along new 17.5-mile four-lane grade-separated divided highway. Contract scope included planning, public hearings, public relations, permitting, right-of-way coordination, utility coordination, design, construction, and long-term warranties. Bridges totaled 15,170 LF and 737,000 SF with twin 3660’ crossings over James River/Norfolk Southern RR and a tri-level interchange at I-64 with 252’

John N. Hardee Expressway
Columbia, SCThrough value-engineering, United was able to improve the project and meet the goals of the SCDOT, FAA, and highway commissioner John N. Hardee along with Triplett-King. The project consisted of a new 2.5 mile access road and interchange with concrete pavement leading to the Columbia Airport and a 190’ long simple span bridge with multi-level ornate mse walls, decorative retaining walls, extensive landscaping, and hydrologic improvements. (Delivered ahead of schedule and under budget in 21 months)

Carolinas Bays Parkway-Phase II
Myrtle Beach, SCUnited facilitated the design and construction of 3 interchange bridges over US 501 and 2 interchange bridges over SC 544 along with extensive mse walls, including 1,300 LF/1,500 SF of bridge with long bulb tee concrete beams and innovative post-grouted drilled shaft foundations. Despite several directive changes in scope, a 4 month delay in site availability, and numerous third party impacts, the project remained on schedule and under budget with a $10,000 per day provision for liquidated damages and bridge construction duration of only 15 months.

MODOT "Safe & Sound" Bridge Replacement Project, Various Locations, Missouri
This bridge improvement program is a large scale system improvement to design and reconstruct 554 bridges currently in poor to serious condition located on major and minor highways throughout the state of Missouri. Speed of construction was a critical component of the contract requirements. The total closure days at each site must be 45 days or less on average. Anticipated major quantities include: 368,500 LF of piling; 492,800 LF of pre-stressed precast concrete beams; 8,040,000 LB of structural steel; 43,000 CY of structural concrete with 8,509,000 LB of reinforcing steel.

VDOT Multiple Bridge Rehabilitation Project
District 2, VAThis regional bridge rehabilitation project located in the Lynchburg District of Virginia was the first fast-track design-build project for VDOT. UIG facilitated the design of the complete replacement of the superstructures on 11 bridge sites. Three of the bridges were grade separation structures on a controlled access highway while the remaining eight bridge sites were located on more rural secondary roads. The superstructure types included structural steel with concrete decks, precast concrete slabs, structure steel with timber decking, structural steel truss with concerte deck and glued-laminated timber planks.

District 4 Bridge Replacement, Design-Build Project
District 4, SCUIG facilitated the design and construction of 25 bridge replacements and associated roadway approaches through a highly accelerated Design-Build program within District 4, SC which consisted of 7 counties. This project was completed with both of their engineering firms Triplett-King and Coleman-Snow.

Palmetto Commerce Parkway Phase II, Design-Build Project
Charleston County, SCUnited Contractors was awarded the $26.5 million dollar project, which is a part of the Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax program. The three bridges on the project consisted of a 100’ concrete flat slab bridge, a 100’ single span prestressed concrete bulb-tee beam bridge and a six span, 540’ long prestressed concrete bulb-tee bridge. All bridges are founded on pile bents. This project was completed with their affiliate engineering companies Triplett-King and Coleman-Snow Consultants.

US 17 Washington Bypass
Beaufort County, NCUIG constructed 6.8 mile grade-separated divided highway bypass on new alignment with 2.8 mile long bridge over Tar River and wetlands, 2 interchanges, 3 overpass bridges, 2 box culverts, 1,200,000 cubic yards earthwork, and 150,000 tons asphalt pavement, along with permitting, mitigation, utility relocations, and innovative top-down construction techniques. (Delivered 9 months ahead of schedule in 48 months with no claims)

I-520 Palmetto Parkway, Phase II
Aiken County, SCUIG was chosen by the SCDOT to construct a 5.5 mile grade separated divided parkway extension w/6 miles of side roads/ramps and 5 interchanges, 4.5M cubic yards earthwork, 200K square yards concrete pavement, 250K tons asphalt pavement, 140K square feet retaining walls, culverts, noise walls, and 12 interchange/overpass/underpass bridges totaling 2,280 linear feet/121,000 square feet with major woven interchange at I-20 and US 25. (Delivered on schedule in 36 months with no claims). Triplett-King provided project management, bridge design and CEI services for this project. Coleman-Snow provided roadway design and utility coordination services.

I-520 Palmetto Parkway-Phase I
North Augusta, SCConstruct 5 mile parkway extension with 1,700,000 CY of earth moving and 6 Design-Build bridges totaling 3000 LF & 284,000 SF of structural steel and prestressed concrete bridges including bridges over the Savannah River and Norfolk Southern Railroad. ). Triplett-King provided project management, bridge design and CEI services for this project. (Delivered ahead of schedule and under budget in 22 months)
