Be strong in the Lord

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might.”

Ephesians 6:10 begins by saying, “Finally,” which means, “Finally, to the last and most important matter at hand. Paul was saying if you don’t remember anything else I’ve said in this letter, please remember this, because I saved the most important thing to the very end. “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.”

This means Paul was not simply suggesting that they receive this power; he was commanding them in the strongest of words to receive it and to receive it as soon as possible. He was urging the Ephesians and all believers to open their hearts to receive a brand-new touch of God’s power into their lives.

Paul also used the passive tense in his command to “be strong.” And the passive tense describes the ongoing, lasting effect of this power upon a believer’s life. This tense tells us that, although there is an immediate strengthening effect when God’s power is released in a believer’s life, it is more than a one-shot experience. It is a supernatural power that continues to strengthen that believer for a long, long time to come.

The supernatural power of God can only be obtained in the Lord. God’s power is locked up in the Person of Jesus Christ. This is actually great news for us because as believers, we are locked up in Christ! Actually, multiple times in Ephesians we are told that we are “in Christ.” That means as we abide in a personal relationship with Jesus, we’re rubbing elbows with the power of God 24 hours a day.
