What You’ll Experience
Internships at UIG are designed to give students a complete understanding of the construction process—from the field to the office. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers, project managers, and safety professionals, gaining exposure to bridge and roadway construction, preconstruction, and estimating. Our program emphasizes safety culture and technical training (OSHA 10 provided), rotational exposure, mentorship, and networking with leadership across multiple projects.
Two intern/co-op events each rotation—one near the beginning and one at the end—for cross-cohort bonding and leadership exposure.
Rotation #1
Introduction to Construction
Summer 1
8 – 12 Weeks
- Laborer on a bridge crew (first 4 weeks)
- 1–2 weeks assisting field survey
- 3–6 weeks supporting PM/CM/PE (RFIs, CTCs, schedule support, quantity tracking)
Rotation #2
Introduction to Preconstruction & Estimating
Summer 2
8 – 12 Weeks
4–6 weeks precon/work plans (bridge deck, caps, beams, diaphragms, piling, etc.)
4–6 weeks estimating (plan reading, take-offs, intro to estimating software)
Exposure to technical construction engineering.
Complete OSHA-10
Shadow critical activities (drilled shafts, piles, forming/pouring caps, screeds, deck pours, beam setting, barrier walls) and field testing (concrete, compaction).
Rotation #3
Choose Your Path
Summer 3
8 – 12 Weeks
- Field Engineer track: Full-time FE on a project (scheduling support, RFIs/NCRs, cost coding, quantity tracking, owner meetings, material ordering).
