United Demolition Responds Overnight to I‑20 Bridge Collapse in Aiken County

In the early morning hours of June 14, 2025, a gasoline tanker truck carrying approximately 8,500 gallons struck the Old Vaucluse Road overpass above Interstate 20 in Aiken County, South Carolina. The tanker exploded into flames on impact, causing a total structural collapse of the overpass onto both directions of I‑20. Remarkably, all individuals involved in the crash sustained only minor injuries.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) immediately activated emergency protocols. United Demolition was called upon for an urgent response and mobilized crews to the scene overnight. Within just 24 hours of the crash, United Demolition successfully completed the emergency removal of the collapsed bridge—a complex demolition operation requiring precision, coordination, and speed.

Following demolition, SCDOT and partner contractors repaved the damaged roadway, installed new guardrails, and ensured traffic safety. In just 36 hours after the incident, the interstate was fully reopened to the public. The seamless transition from demolition to restoration highlighted the value of rapid response partnerships and experienced infrastructure teams in emergency scenarios.

SCDOT has confirmed the overpass is a complete loss and will be rebuilt under an emergency design-build contract. The new bridge is expected to be completed within nine to twelve months.
