United Infrastructure Group Wins 2025 Carolinas AGC Construction Excellence Award for I-20 Emergency Response

We are proud to announce that United Infrastructure Group (UIG) has been honored with a 2025 Carolinas AGC Construction Excellence Award for our leadership and execution on the Emergency Demolition of the Damaged S-2-105 (Old Vaucluse Road) Bridge Over I-20 and Repair of Roadway Near MM 13 in Aiken County project.

This award recognizes not only UIG’s commitment to excellence, but also the rapid, coordinated response from our partners and crews following a devastating incident on June 14, 2025, that brought one of South Carolina’s busiest interstates to a halt.

A Catastrophic Incident—and a Rapid Response

In the early morning hours of June 14, 2025, a tanker truck carrying over 8,500 gallons of gasoline collided with a support column beneath the Old Vaucluse Road overpass on Interstate 20. The resulting explosion and fire led to a full collapse of the bridge, blocking all eastbound and westbound lanes and triggering an emergency response of unprecedented urgency.

SCDOT contacted UIG and United Demolition within minutes of the incident. Resource deployment began within 15 minutes. By 10:00 a.m., field crews were on-site assessing hazards, staging equipment, and initiating structural planning. With most equipment already en route, the first machines arrived just an hour later, and full-scale demolition efforts were underway.

Reopening I-20—Within 36 Hours

Demolition crews worked through the night, navigating unstable debris, extreme temperatures, and logistical coordination with state and local agencies. By 8:00 a.m. Sunday, the collapsed bridge was fully removed. By 12:00 p.m., debris was cleared and the corridor was prepared for paving.

Thanks to the critical contributions of our project partner Satterfield Construction Co., Inc., who mobilized rapidly to mill the damaged asphalt and resurface the interstate, I-20 fully reopened to traffic by 4:00 p.m. on Sunday—just 36 hours after the collapse.

This type of recovery timeline is virtually unheard of for an event of this scale. It reflects a coordinated emergency response that prioritized public safety, mobility, and economic continuity.

A True Team Effort

While UIG was the primary contract holder, this was far from a solo effort. United Demolition performed 95% of the work on the ground, managing demolition operations with a zero-incident safety record. Satterfield Construction stepped in to execute paving with speed and precision. SCDOT forces and their on-call contractors also played vital roles, including cable barrier and guardrail restoration.

From demolition crews to asphalt paving teams, traffic control to environmental compliance, the project showcased what is possible when public and private partners come together under pressure with clarity, urgency, and commitment.

Special Operations Services in Action

UIG is honored to serve as a first responder for emergency work across the Southeast through our Special Operations Services division. Whether responding to natural disasters, transportation emergencies, or structural failures caused by external impacts, our teams are trained, equipped, and ready to act when communities need us most.

This award affirms our belief that infrastructure excellence isn’t just about building—it’s about protecting what’s built and restoring what’s broken.
