Project Overview

The Main Road Corridor Segment A project addresses critical traffic, safety, and connectivity challenges in the West Ashley and Johns Island region of Charleston County. The design-build scope includes the construction of a new fully directional interchange at US 17 and Main Road, designed to improve access and reduce congestion along one of the area’s most heavily traveled corridors.

The project also widens Main Road from Bees Ferry Road to River Road/Chisholm Road, expanding the existing two-lane roadway into a four-lane divided facility with improved shoulders and turn lanes. Additional elements include new roundabouts, upgraded drainage infrastructure, and a 12-foot-wide shared-use path connecting to the West Ashley Greenway.

Scope of Work

As part of the Archer-United-Banks Joint Venture, United Infrastructure Group (UIG) plays a key role in the design-build delivery of this major transportation corridor. The project scope includes:

  • Construction of a new directional interchange at US 17 and Main Road
  • Widening of Main Road from Bees Ferry Road to River Road/Chisholm Road
  • Bridge and structural work for the interchange and ramp systems
  • Installation of shared-use pedestrian and bicycle paths
  • Implementation of complex traffic-control phasing to maintain mobility during construction
  • Stormwater and drainage improvements to enhance resilience against flooding
  • Coordination with multiple agencies and stakeholders to ensure environmental compliance and minimize community impacts

Project Highlights

  • Expands capacity and improves safety for one of Charleston County’s busiest corridors
  • Provides critical connectivity between Johns Island, West Ashley, and the regional highway network
  • Incorporates multi-modal access with dedicated pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure
  • Enhances drainage and storm-resilience in a flood-prone coastal environment
  • Demonstrates AUBJV’s and UIG’s ability to deliver large, complex design-build projects that balance innovation, safety, and community benefit

Strategic Impact

The Main Road Corridor Segment A project represents a transformative investment in Charleston County’s infrastructure. By improving mobility, safety, and connectivity across the US 17 corridor, it will significantly reduce congestion, support continued growth on Johns Island, and strengthen resilience for decades to come.

United Infrastructure Group is proud to partner with Archer Western and Banks Construction in delivering this milestone project for the citizens of Charleston County.
