Project Overview

The SR 4 / US 1 Widening Project in Toombs County, Georgia, represents a major upgrade to one of the region’s most vital transportation corridors. Spanning approximately 3 miles from McDilda Road to Resmando Road, this project expands the existing two-lane highway to a modern four-lane divided facility designed to improve safety, mobility, and freight efficiency throughout the Lyons–Vidalia area.

The corridor improvements are part of GDOT’s long-range effort to modernize the US 1 / SR 4 route through southeast Georgia, enhancing connectivity and supporting economic growth across multiple counties.

Scope of Work

United Infrastructure Group (UIG) serves as bridge subcontractor to McLendon Enterprises for the structural components of the project. UIG’s work includes:

  • Construction of new bridge structures to accommodate the widened roadway alignment
  • Demolition and replacement of existing crossings and culverts as required
  • Installation of substructure and superstructure elements, including pile foundations, abutments, pier caps, girders, and cast-in-place bridge decks
  • Coordination with McLendon’s roadway and drainage operations to maintain alignment and grade control
  • Erosion control and environmental protection in compliance with GDOT and Georgia EPD permit conditions, particularly near intermittent streams and wetlands within the Ohoopee River watershed
  • Integration of traffic-control phasing and safety measures to ensure continuous operation of US 1 during construction

Project Highlights

  • Part of a multi-phase corridor improvement that includes six new bridges and over four miles of roadway widening
  • Designed to improve freight mobility and local access while reducing congestion and travel times
  • Incorporates modern safety features including wider shoulders, upgraded drainage, and improved sight distances
  • Supports economic development in Toombs County and the surrounding southeast Georgia region

Strategic Impact

By delivering high-quality bridge construction on this corridor, UIG continues its long tradition of partnership with GDOT and Georgia’s leading general contractors. This project demonstrates UIG’s capability to perform complex structural work within active highway environments — maintaining traffic, managing environmental sensitivities, and executing safely and efficiently under demanding schedules.
